About Robyn Gothelf
Hi, my name is Robyn Gothelf (pronounced "Got-Helf"), and I am a PsychoTherapist. I have a Social Work license and a Master's Degree in Infant Developmental Psychology as well as Early Childhood Special Education. I specialize in Children and Families. I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Typically, when parents come to me due to problems relating to their child, there are special needs involved. Special needs can be defined in many different ways: as a highly sensitive child, a child who is disturbed due to divorce or any roadblock in life, or a child with an intense, unexpected temperament or diagnosed disability. These issues typically lead to escalations of emotion or an emotional shutdown, which is called Emotional Dysregulation and is very disruptive to the whole family. However, none of these issues are the parents' fault, who often blame themselves. These issues are also not the fault of the child, who is typically misunderstood. I am here to help everyone understand each other and make communication more effective. I expect parents to participate with me actively. We will use Behavior Modification, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and psycho-dynamic theories to help you understand your child and improve communication.
Does this describe your situation? Is your child in crisis? Are you unsure how to handle him/her/them? Are you coping with a divorce, custody, or co-parenting issue? When we see our children having trouble adjusting and becoming dysregulated so quickly (usually reacting more strongly than we would like), our child is trying to show us they are having trouble and need assistance. In younger children, this is often manifested in misbehavior, such as not listening, sharing, or following directions. When they are a little older often we see them having trouble with social cues or sensory issues. Listen to yourself, as a parent you know the most about your child. Are you worrying they may be on the Spectrum? Socializing with the wrong crowd? Let me help you figure out what is causing the disturbance, which may just be fixed with some assistance with your behavior management. Either way, any therapy involves you and your child.
I am a qualified provider (M.Ed) to give assessments for ADHD and Autism. Still, I do not have a Ph.D. or do NeuroPsychological Evaluations, which are often required for formal SSI and IEP evaluations. However, if I determine it is needed, I will point you in that direction. So, please ask whoever told you to get an assessment if they need a formal evaluation given by a PhD., which is very expensive and has a long waiting list. Also, ask yourself why you need this before you call. My assessments and my work with your child will help answer your question: Is my child Autistic, or do they have ADHD? I will lead you on the right path, to a Psychiatrist or Psychologist so you can get what your child needs. Typically, unless it is for SSI benefits or an IEP in school, it is not the formal evaluation needed; instead, it is the treatment, which is what I do. We will work on you understanding realistic expectations and improving communication with your child.
Let me help you interpret and manage your child's behavior with psychoeducation, feeling identification, and reflection meaning. I aim to help you and your children understand who they are and their developmental needs. You will also better understand your child's temperament. Your communication will improve, and at that point, so will your relationship.
Parenting is complex, and dealing with life is difficult, especially when the expected situation is not the hand you were dealt. I'd like to help you navigate these issues with new understanding and coping skills.
