About Poonam Melwani
Poonam Melwani, LMSW, earned her Masters in Social Work at Silberman School for Social Work at Hunter College in New York and is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Michigan. She has been providing counseling to adults and adolescents struggling with various mental health-related symptoms, such as trauma, anxiety, and depression since 2014.
Poonam is certified as a trauma specialist and practices Trauma-Focused CBT and is also trained in CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy. Poonam likes to provide insight into how the mind and body connection impacts our way of processing and communicating our emotions and thoughts. She likes to help clients accept and not fear their emotions. Poonam is also trained in the Gottman Method and works with couples on how to better communicate as well as improve connecting and intimacy.
Poonam also has a passion for working with survivors of sexual assault. In the past, she has worked at Wayne County SAFE as a sexual assault advocate/counselor where she helped both adolescent and adults overcome their assault by learning tools to manage their anxiety and fears surrounding their trauma. Poonam has also worked with adolescents struggling with academic and peer-related concerns in school settings and has a passion for helping young adults between 18-25 adjust to college life, explore career paths, and manage social and interpersonal relationships.
Poonam uses a person-centered, eclectic and cross-cultural perspective when working with her clients as she understands each individual and each experience is unique. Poonam provides a warm, non-judgmental, and safe space for clients to share their most innermost struggles. Poonam empowers clients by helping them process their emotions, identify their strengths, and learn new healthy coping techniques to help them overcome their stressors. To become our better selves, we have to accept that life is a process of healing and growth.
